TWO HT STUDENTS CHOSEN TO JOIN THE POSSE
Posse Foundation selects students to succeed as leaders in college
(Chicago) January 18, 2008 – Seniors Jennifer
Beltran and Jesus Gomez each have received a four year scholarship to
attend Carleton College and Denison University, respectively. Their
work through HighSight, a local scholarship and mentoring program,
brought them to the attention of the
Posse Foundation, a group that
has helped more than 1,800 students become leaders in college. After a
rigorous application process unlike any other, Jenny and Jesus have
been chosen to be part of the “posse,” a 10-student team at each
university that will pursue their academic goals while promoting
cross-cultural dialogue on campus.
The Posse Foundation identifies students who want to have an impact on campus. Their unique
application and interview process involves interactive workshops and
other activities to identify a student's individual personality and
their potential to work as a member of a team. Each university
participates in the final stage of the process and ultimately offers
four year scholarships to 10 students.
For Jenny and Jesus, though, their work is just
beginning. In addition to completing their studies at Holy Trinity and
their obligations with HighSight, they will participate in an
extensive 8-month training program offered by the
Posse Foundation
just before heading to college in the fall. According to Posse, “Posse
Scholars participate in workshops which address four different areas:
1) team building and group support; 2) cross-cultural communication;
3) leadership and how to become an active agent of change on a
university campus; and 4) academic excellence.” All students benefit
from additional training to help them adapt to the college scene,
especially how to manage their time and finances.
According to Timothy M. Bopp, President of Holy
Trinity High School, “Jenny and Jesus are much more than great
students. They represent the real value of an education at Holy
Trinity High School, where we educate the heart as well as the mind of
students. We have known for some time about their true potential. We
are thankful to the Posse Foundation, Carleton College and Denison
University for their commitment to developing tomorrow’s leaders and
for acknowledging Jenny and Jesus as part of that vision.”
